Lessons at
York Singing Academy

Singing lessons at York Singing Academy take place in the 14th-century St Mary's Tower, found on the junction of Marygate and Bootham. Lessons are conducted by an experienced singing teacher and a professional piano accompanist, and the focus is always to learn through encouragement and having fun.

Approximately half of each lesson centres around learning a solid vocal technique in the Italian 'bel canto' tradition, the art of 'beautiful singing', which dates from the 17th-century. This is achieved through vocal warm-ups and technical exercises. The second half of the lesson is learning how to apply that technique to vocal repertoire. We cater for all styles and traditions of music, as the vocal techniques we teach can be applied to any genre.

All pupils begin with a single introductory lesson where we listen to your voice, show you the basics of the techniques we teach, and discuss what you want to achieve from your lessons. It is not an audition, just an opportunity for us to get to know you, and for you to see if what we offer is right for you.
