York Singing Academy takes great pleasure in developing young voices, setting singers up for a future singing career. The Academy's younger pupils are very active across the region and cover all genres from classical and sacred music, musical theatre productions to more modern styles. Our pupils also have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised singing qualifications, which help them to gain acceptance for studying singing, music, and performing arts in further education if they choose to.
The Academy has a long association with pupils singing in the girls and boys choirs of York Minster, and members of the music staff in the Minster have observed lessons in the Academy. Students of the Academy have been some of the youngest to join the choir, have become Head Choristers, and have featured as soloists on recordings and broadcasts. Once they leave the Minster choir, they are then successful in gaining full music scholarships to schools such as Bootham, St Peter's or Pocklington. There is also the opportunity for them to continue their choral singing with ensembles such as the York Chapter House Youth Choir.
The Academy has a fine record of preparing students for GCSE and A-Level exams and then auditions for Theatre College, Conservatoire or University. In recent years, pupils have gone to Italia Conti, Guildford School of Acting, Royal Central School, University of Chichester Conservatoire, Trinity College London, Royal Northern College of Music, and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland among others.
Pupils have also received training with the prestigious British Youth Opera, National Youth Theatre, National Youth Choir, and have taken choral scholarships at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Students also take many of the leading roles in amateur musical theatre and operatic productions across York.
For pupils of any age who wish to obtain formal singing qualifications, we prepare them for graded singing exams. They can be particularly valuable for young singers, as accredited music exams also gain the candidate UCAS points which can assist students applying for any subject at university or other higher education institution.
The Academy is proud of its record that every student presented to the Associated Board (ABRSM) or Trinity College London (TCL) exams have succeeded in achieving their designated grade. Many pupils achieve results of Merit and Distinction; the highest mark received has been an incredible 146/150. We enter pupils for ABRSM Practical exams, the new Performance Grade and Musical Theatre syllabuses, in addition to the TCL Practical and Digital Assessment exams.
